Are you a creative person who loves to make things? Check out Welding, a two-year, six credit program, where you will learn many of the skills the welding industry is seeking in qualified candidates! You will learn in a state-of-the-art lab and use software the shipyards are using to train their employees!
This two-year course combines shop experience with related instruction. Students learn to identify and understand the composition of metals as well as to fabricate various projects. They practice oxyacetylene welding and burning, electric arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding and gas metal arc welding. Related studies include blueprint reading, applied mathematics and weld symbols. Students will prepare for the following credentials or certifications: American Welding Society (AWS) Certification- Level 1; National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) Assessment- Welding; and the Workplace Readiness Skills for the Commonwealth Examination.

Right now Welding students are working on:

Fabricating different products such as:
Cage and gate for Electrical class
Gates for customer's back yard and swimming pool
Tables and much more
Learning many welding processes such as: oxyacetylene welding, shielded metal arc welding, and gas tungsten arc welding, so they can create anything out of metal.
Participating in field trips to ODU, BAE, Colonnas, Newport News Shipbuilding, and Liebherr.

In addition to going straight to the work force, our graduates have many options after successfully completing their courses! Further your education at a community college, technical school or university:

All students at the Tech Center have the option to obtain an internship towards the end of their experience here.
